Peter Whiteford is a Professor at the Crawford School at the Australian National University and the director of the Social Policy Institute. In this talk titled “The myth of us and them: why we all need a welfare state” on 16 September 2017, Professor Whiteford discussed why Australia, and all other high-income countries – need a welfare state and why it’s important. Along the way he challenged the stereotypes commonly associated with welfare recipients and challenges the notion of a welfare system of ‘us’ and ‘them.’
