The Chair in Public Finance (CPF) at Victoria University of Wellington is seeking to appoint a 1.5 year full-time, or up to 3 years part-time, Research Fellow in public finance/public economics/taxation. The role is at research fellow/post-doctoral fellow level. The successful candidate will be expected to undertake public finance/economics research and engage with official public policy specialists to support the research/policy interests of the sponsoring organisations of the CPF. Sponsors include the New Zealand Treasury, Inland Revenue, Ministry of Education and The Productivity Commission.

The Research Fellow will:

  • Develop a research agenda in the field of applied public economics, public finance or taxation. Areas of particular interest include, but are not limited to:
    • public sector
    • productivity measurement and estimation, especially for education and health
    • economic analysis of social investment approaches to public spending
    • alternative tax-transfer systems and future work patterns
  • Engage with public policy professionals to demonstrate useful research applications to policy.
  • Liaise with members of the CPF Advisory Board on research topics and policy engagement.
  • Work with the CPF to help raise external research funding.

Education, Experience and Knowledge

A PhD or equivalent in economics is expected, preferably with a public economics or tax focus. Candidates without a PhD but equivalent research experience will be considered.

Experience in applied economic research and a desire to work on policy-relevant research is essential.

Strong quantitative skills, a knowledge of latest applied econometric techniques and familiarity with micro-data analysis are highly desirable.

Experience of publishing in international academic and/or policy journals is desirable.

Strong communication skills proven ability to work with others are essential.

Experience in communicating economic and/or tax concepts to non-specialists such as policy advisers is desirable.
