New Zealand’s Minister of Finance Grant Robertson delivered the country’s Budget 2021 on last Thursday, 20 May 2021.

Tax and transfer measures announced in the Budget include:

  • Boosting weekly benefit rates by between NZ$32-55 per adult, in line with the recommendation from the Welfare Expert Advisory Group;
  • Indexing Childcare assistance income thresholds to average wage growth;
  • Forming a tripartite working group, which includes the Government, Business NZ and the New Zealand Council of Trade Unions, in developing a new Social Unemployment Insurance scheme that would support workers to retain about 80 per cent of their income for a period after they lose their jobs.
