The 19th Household, Income and Labour Dynamics in Australia (HILDA) Statistical Report has been released.

Conducted by the Melbourne Institute of Applied Economic & Social Research, the report presents key findings from Waves 1 to 22 of the HILDA Survey and explores 12 topics:

  • Households and family life
  • Household economic wellbeing
  • The labour market
  • Household wealth
  • COVID-19: Behaviours, perceptions and symptoms
  • Perceived employment discrimination
  • Housing and neighbourhood satisfaction
  • Gambling
  • Religious affiliation and attendance at religious services
  • Community participation
  • Charitable giving
  • Pet ownership

Key findings from the report include:

  • Inequality in Australia is at its highest since the HILDA Survey started in 2001.
  • Australian men are not doing more housework than they were 20 years ago.
  • The risk of problem gambling is increasing in Australia.
  • Three factors, regular savings habits, a longer savings horizon, and greater preparedness to take financial risks, were found to be associated with greater wealth accumulation.
  • Single parents are the demographic that is the most negatively impacted by economic factors.
  • The percentage of Australians reporting weather-related damage to their house reached an unprecedented level.
