Two ANU academics in the area of tax and transfer Professor John Hewson and David Stanton have been elected to the Academy of the Social Sciences in Australia (ASSA) for their distinguished contributions to their disciplines and to society.

John Hewson is a former leader of the Liberal Party and Chair in the Crawford School Tax and Transfer Policy Institute (TTPI), while David Stanton is a member of the Social Policy Institute, also at the Crawford School.

Professor Frank Bongiorno, from the School of History, is also among six ANU academics who receive the honours. He is an Australian labour, political and cultural historian and has been studying the Whitlam social democratic reforms in 1970s.

This year, 46 new fellows, including 23 women and 23 men, have been elected into the Academy. They will be formally welcomed and inducted at the Academy’s General Meeting and Annual Symposium in Adelaide from 18-20 October 2017.
