The independent member of parliament for the federal seat of Wentworth, Allegra Spender, has recently released a policy paper, calling for significant tax reform in the next parliament.
The Tax Green Paper argues Australia should have six priorities for tax reform:
- Lower income taxes on working Australians;
- Rebalance tax settings in favour of home ownership rather than investing in existing dwellings;
- Incentivise innovation and business investment to increase productivity and economic growth;
- Rebalance tax settings so that the revenue base remains stable with changes to demographics and consumption patterns;
- Adjust tax settings to support Australia’s energy transition, rather than work against it; and
- Implement institutional reform, including a Tax Reform Commission.
