Identifying and Reducing the Income Tax Gap for Individuals not in Business

The objective of this audit is to assess the effectiveness of the Australian Taxation Office’s (ATO’s) arrangements for identifying and reducing the income tax gap for individuals not in business.

The ANAO proposes to examine:

  • Does the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) use appropriate methods for identifying the tax gap?
  • Has the ATO implemented risk-based strategies for reducing the tax gap?
  • Does the ATO assess the effectiveness of its strategies for reducing the tax gap?

Debt Management and Recovery in Services Australia

The objective of this audit is to assess the effectiveness of Services Australia’s management and recovery of social security and welfare payment debt.

The ANAO proposes to examine:

  • Does Services Australia have fit-for-purpose debt management and recovery governance arrangements?
  • Has Services Australia developed and implemented effective strategies and processes to manage and recover debt?
  • Does Services Australia assess and report the effectiveness of its debt management and recovery?
